Toluene

Toluene is also known as toluol. It is a colorless clear aromatic hydrocarbon with the formula C7H8, it is also referred to by the name methyl benzene. Toluene occurs naturally at low levels in crude oil and is a byproduct in the production of gasoline by a catalytic reformer or ethylene cracker. It is also a byproduct of the production of coke from coal. Toluene is used across several industries for various applications. It is predominantly used as an appreciable solvent.

Application: As a solvent, toluene can be used in paints, paint thinners, adhesives, inks, resins, cleaning agents, leather tanners and inks.  It can also be used to manufacture polymers that produce nylon, plastic soda bottles and for pharmaceuticals, dyes and cosmetic products.  Toluene is also used as a coolant in sodium cold traps underneath nuclear reactor loops.
